Bhutan

The mountain kingdom of Bhutan, known as the Land of the Thunder Dragon, is a place of mystery and magic, where a traditional Buddhist culture has remained untarnished by global influences.

In the shadow of the mighty Himalayas, Bhutan is all about lofty peaks and spectacular monasteries. The development of a tourist infrastructure has been carefully controlled with sustainable very much the key word.

The country holds many surprises where monasteries are part of the mainstream culture. Most of these religious centres hold colourful annual festivals featuring mesmerising dance dramas, the largest of which is the Tsechu  with dances in honour of the 8th century Buddhist master, Guru Rinpoche. Bhutan’s most famous monastery is the ‘Tiger’s Nest’, is one of the most venerated religious sites in the Himalayas. The steep walk to the monastery offers panoramic views across the Paro valley, which at the right time of the year is a brightly coloured sea of Rhododendron.

The country has huge swathes of protected natural areas and its forests and mountains is home to an amazing diversity of plants and creatures including according to local tradition, the infamous Yeti!

The two most popular times of the year to visit are between March and May and September to the end of November. The colder months see reduced prices and crisp winter views.

Visit Bhutan and you’ll find a country unlike anywhere else on earth. It has the only capital city without traffic lights and measures gross national happiness to judge what needs to be improved.
