More Information about The Masai Mara

The Masai Mara National Reserve (also spelled Maasai Mara; known by the locals as The Mara) is a large game reserve in south-western Kenya, which is effectively the northern continuation of the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. This world-renowned reserve, which stretches over 1510 sq km of open rolling grasslands, is backed by the spectacular Esoit Oloololo (Siria) Escarpment, watered by the Mara River and littered with an astonishing amount of wildlife.

When it was originally established in 1948 as a wildlife sanctuary, the Mara covered only 520 square kilometres of the current area, including the Mara Triangle. The area was extended to the east in 1961 to cover 1,821 km2 and converted to a game reserve. Of the big cats, lions are found in large prides everywhere, and it is not uncommon to see them hunting. Cheetahs and leopards are less visible, but still fairly common. Elephants, buffalos, zebras and hippos also exist in large numbers with the favoured experience being the annual wildebeest migration in July and August, when millions of these spectacular beasts move north from the Serengeti.

The most popular tourist attraction here is Safari and there are many tours that can be easily arranged to allow you to view this amazing environment in all its natural glory.
