Brisbane is Australia's third largest city and is rapidly becoming one of the country's most desirable places to live with an estimated 1000 people moving there every week. The gently curving Brisbane River runs through the heart of the city where kayaking and water/jet skiing are popular pastimes, with cafes and bars dotted all along its edge offering a wide variety of food and drink where you can sit and relax whilst watching the world go by. Although this is a modern cosmopolitan city with contemporary architecture, world class art galleries and a superb up to date music scene the city still retains a very laid back attitude and is home to some of the friendliest local people in the country.
Popular tourist attractions include the Koala sanctuary (the first and largest koala sanctuary in the world), the Botanical Gardens (Queensland's premier subtropical botanic gardens), Lamington National Park (home to a staggering variety of plants, animals and birdlife), The Steve Irwin Zoo (established under the name of Beerwah Reptile Park by Bob and Lyn Irwin in 1970. Bob's son Steve - aka 'The Crocodile Hunter' - made the park a popular tourist attraction and changed the name to Australia Zoo), Story Bridge (renamed from Jubilee Bridge to Story Bridge in 1940 in honour of John Douglas Story) and Moreton Island (a paradise which stretches from Bribie Island in the north to the Southern Bay Islands and a place where you can indulge in some of the world's best diving or enjoy sand tobogganing, surfing and quad biking).
