Visit Atomic Bomb Dome, Hiroshima, Japan
The Atomic Bomb Dome is the most famous landmark in Hiroshima, Japan and is situated next to the Aioi River. The building's original name was the Industrial Promotion Hall, and it was considerably larger than the remains left after the explosion (the Peace Museum has a model of the building before the blast).
It was one of the few buildings left standing within a two kilometre radius of the explosion and is bathed in green light after dark offering an eerie but fascinating view of this miraculous building which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. The ruin serves as a memorial to the people who were killed in the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. Over 70,000 people were killed instantly, and another 70,000 suffered fatal injuries from the radiation.
