The city of Ho Chi Minh (formerly known as Saigon) was officially renamed in 1976 after merging with the surrounding Gia Dịnh Province and is home to teeming markets, ramshackle wooden shops selling silk, spices and baskets, modern restaurants, endless alleys, huge sky scrapers, designer malls and ancient churches and temples.
