More Information about Auckland
Auckland is a vast sprawling city shaped in many places by the ridges of lava flows from many volcanoes which form its main thoroughfares and is by far the largest city in New Zealand. This is an amazingly multicultural area with 1,377,200 residents, 31 % of the country's population amongst which is large Asian community and the biggest Polynesian population in any city in the world and its stunning architecture includes rows of Victorian and Edwardian villas in its trendy inner-city suburbs.
Popular tourist attractions include the Rangitoto (with its distinctive symmetrical shield volcano cone rising 260 metres (850 ft) high over the Hauraki Gulf) and Waiheke (which has several locations of interest to geologists, namely an argillite outcrop in Omiha Bay and a chert stack at the end of Pohutukawa Point) Islands, the Sky Tower (an observation and telecommunications tower located on the corner of Victoria and Federal Streets in the Auckland CBD), The Auckland Domain (Auckland's oldest park, and at 75 hectares one of the largest in the city), Auckland Zoo (a 16.35-hectare (40-acre) zoological garden situated next to Western Springs park not far from Auckland's central business district) and various wine tours where you can see the rolling hills of the rural countryside, the wild West Coast's Tasman Sea or the Pacific East Coast, talk to the wine makers and sample their wines.
