More Information about Wellington
Wellington is the capital of New Zealand surrounded by hillsides and a city that prides itself on its cultural and artistic wealth. Although there is only a relatively small population here, there are a surprising number of quality restaurants, cafés, bars, galleries, shops and theatres with very good accommodation to be found at decent prices. Wellington is home to the countries film industry and the acclaimed director Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings) still calls Wellington his home.
Wellington is steeped in history and mythology with Maori legend stating that the explorer Kupe was the first person to discover the area naming it Te Whanga Nui a Tara, later the first European settlers arrived in the New Zealand Company’s ship Aurora on 22 January 1840, not long after Colonel William Wakefield arrived to buy land from the Maori.
Popular tourist attractions include Mount Victoria, used twice as a location in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, Miramar, home to a series of multi-million dollar studios, sound stages, and pre- and post-production including Weta Digital – Avatar and Weta Workshop facilities and cable car rides. The line consists of 628 metres of mostly straight 1,000 mm (3 ft. 3 3⁄8 in)-gauge single track with pine sleepers. There is also a cable car museum that can be visited which is educational for families and enthusiasts alike.
