From its summit Mount Victoria offers stunning 360 degree panoramic views of the city of Wellington, the harbour and the surrounding areas, this is Wellingtons favourite lookout point where you can view the ferries sailing into the harbour, watch the planes flying into the airport or just marvel at some of the most beautiful sunsets to be seen, not just in New Zealand but anywhere in the world.
This is a great place for walking, jogging and mountain biking of if you are feeling a bit more adventurous there is a world famous Tyre Swing situated on the lower slopes. At the end of the summit road, near the viewing platform, is a striking memorial to Richard Byrd, the American aviator.
Byrd mounted numerous Antarctic expeditions from his base in New Zealand; in 1929 he made the first flight over the South Pole. More recently, Mount Victoria provided a filming location for the first movie in the Lord of the Rings trilogy directed by Peter Jackson.
