Team Blog: Andrew’s short but special voyage on Allura with Oceania Cruises

When the chance came up to be one of the first UK agents to sail on Oceania’s brand-new Allura, I jumped at it. Huge thanks to Natalie and the team at Oceania for the invitation – with Beaver Travel’s growing luxury cruise business, it was the perfect opportunity to see the ship first-hand and understand the “Oceania difference”.

Although I’ve cruised before with the likes of Crystal, Regent, Explora and SeaDream, this was my first time with Oceania – and Allura certainly made an impression. From the moment I stepped on board in Genoa, fresh from a couple of nights in Portofino, there was a real wow factor. The ship feels big, elegant and luxurious, yet relaxed and welcoming too.

So, who is it for? In my view, Allura is perfect for discerning travellers who love luxury but don’t necessarily want excursions and drinks bundled in. It suits couples, solo travellers, foodies, and culture seekers alike – especially those familiar with higher-end cruising looking for inspiring itineraries across Europe, Japan, Australia, Africa, Canada and beyond.

Food is at the heart of the Oceania promise, and I can honestly say it exceeded all expectations. The variety, freshness and attention to dietary needs was outstanding – the best vegan desserts I’ve ever had on any ship, and that’s coming from a steakhouse fan! Sitting outside at the back of the ship for lunch, a chilled French rosé in hand and the ocean stretching out ahead, was one of those simple but standout moments I’ll never forget.

Life on board was as relaxed or as active as you wanted it to be. I spent time by the pool, used the gym, played mini golf, both table and padel tennis, and shuffleboard. I even tried out the driving range on the top deck.

I also made use of the Oceania IT suite; and the cooking school was another highlight – a brilliant facility that really sets Allura apart. Service was relaxed but professional throughout, with plenty of those “little extras” that make Oceania special.

We had a port day in Split, Croatia – my first visit – and I loved mooching around the waterfront and old town, exploring the markets along the promenade, and soaking up the easy mix of dining and shopping. Just the kind of place I’d recommend to clients for a laid-back day ashore.

For me, Oceania is an ideal fit for Beaver Travel clients. It offers the luxury and quality of Regent, but with more flexibility around excursions and drinks – often at a better price point, without compromising on cuisine or service.

The overall onboard vibe? Relaxed, sociable, luxury without fuss – with the freedom to do as much or as little as you like. The itineraries are some of the best in the market, and even though this was only a short voyage, it gave me a real flavour of what makes Oceania stand out.

In a sentence? Allura surprised me – in the best possible way – with some of the finest cuisine I’ve had at sea and a luxury cruise experience that exceeded expectations.
