Spain
The Spanish mainland and her islands present extraordinary variety of cultural identities, traditions, cuisine and language.
Her rich history witnessed almost eight centuries of occupation by the Moors of North Africa, who built dazzling cities in the South of Spain, the most famous of which, Granada, is home to The Alhambra Palace, the jewel of Moorish architecture.
The Moors were also responsible for building 17 universities at a time when the rest of Europe had only two. This intellectual legacy helped catapult the Christian reclaimed Spain of the 15th and 16th centuries to the position of a world super power with dominion over Central and South America.
Modern Spain is the perfect tourist destination with endless beaches bordering the Mediterranean and Atlantic and an ideal climate that is a magnet for summer visitors on the mainland and the Balearic Islands of the Mediterranean, whilst The Canary Islands, off the southern coast of Morocco, are the ideal year round sunshine destination.
For the cultured visitor the cities of Barcelona and Madrid are bursting with galleries together with elegant classical and provoking contemporary architecture. Each has a vibrant street culture reflecting the need to relax in the excessive midday heat and to party late into the cooling night, a habit pursued across the whole country!
And this need to enjoy a long lunch or dinner over a relaxing glass or three is rooted in the serving of tapas, which these days has been elevated into mini culinary artworks in the northern cities of Burgos, Bilbao and San Sebastian. Travel to Girona in Cataluña for the ultimate food adventure at the world’s top restaurant, El Celler de Can Roca.
Spain really has something for everyone. We look forward at Beaver Travel to helping you decide on the ideal holiday for you, your family or friends.
